REVIEW
4 * star
Review by Nicole McCurdy
This is one of those books that after having finished reading it I had to sit back and contemplate how I really felt about it. The entire concept for the story is intelligent and laden with supernatural suspense but what should be a terrific tale of sinister dreams, beautiful mysterious strangers, angels and demons somehow fell a little bit flat, not massively so but I felt like I should have been blown away by this book but wasn’t. I liked it well enough but some unknown element to the story or lack of something just didn’t help it reach its ultimate potential. In saying that however I fully put the blame on my age as Unclaimed makes a brilliant Y.A Paranormal book and I think that’s why I couldn’t connect with the characters or the High school setting. The style of writing was very contemporary and full of teenage dialogue and situations that will appeal to a younger reader but I’m in the over twenty five age bracket now so ultimately I wasn’t the best target audience. It is a clever tale and it is chock full of interesting and diverse characters both human and other worldly so if you’re in that post-Beautiful Creatures phase and looking for something new and edgy to read or are under the age of twenty five Unclaimed is a good book to pass the time with. The writing may be a bit young and simplistic but it works and it was dramatic and exciting enough to keep me interested till the very end. I will take a chance on the next book in this series.
TeasersExcerpt 1
My entire body pulses in the wake of his touch. His words “if you were mine” keep circling around in my head, and with each rotation, something inside me grows. He makes me feel happy and less broken. I feel I could take on the world as long as he’s beside me. Whatever he is, I don’t care. I’ve never felt anything like this, and I’ll go to Hell and back to keep it. Regardless of what happens to me, I have to protect him. I have to keep him safe, always. He grins and squeezes my hand again. My body responds with such intensity, I almost feel as if I were floating. I don’t want it to ever stop. I want to stay strong. I want to be brave. I want to feel safe. He gives me all of that. I want to hold him forever, even if it’s only his hand. “Tomorrow,” he says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ll find a way to see you.” “Promise?”
Excerpt 3
My heart flutters. I really do like MJ. I blush and pop a few grapes into my mouth. As ecstatic as that makes me feel, I still don’t know, fully, if I can trust him—not until I know what he is. “So … you still haven’t answered my original question. Government experiment, superhero, or something else. Which is it?” He sighs, shaking his head. “I wasn’t created in a lab somewhere.” “What about an alien?” “No.” “Mutant?” “No.” “Warlock?” “Wouldn’t that fall under the category of magician?” “Magicians are usually fake. Warlocks and witches could be real. So are you one?” “No.” Stumped, I rest my chin on my hand and huff in exasperation. “Give up?” he asks. “No. But I’ve made some good progress on my list.” “You have a list?” “Uh huh.” I toss a few more grapes into my mouth. “Of what you think I might be?” I nod. “I don’t suppose you could just let it go?” I narrow my eyes at him. “If I did a bunch of crazy things that you couldn’t explain, would you let it go?” He smirks and shakes his head. “You win.
Excerpt 5
“Now say if you had changed even one of those things, your destiny would be completely different.” I know which fork I would choose to redo if I could. It’s the same one I’ve regretted time and time again. If I could go back, I would have never rejected his first kiss. Damien smiles. “Say, for example, this alternate-reality dream of yours is one where we kissed the first night. Everything would have been different between us. However, it is because you rejected my kiss that I looked at you differently. It is because you were sent away that I missed you. It is because you were promised to another man that I came there that night, which ultimately led to us being together now. As much as I wished we had kissed the first night, I am glad we did not. I, for one, like this path much better.”
Author bio
Laurie Wetzel has always had a passion for writing, but it wasn’t until a New Years Resolution in 2011 that she finally shared her lifelong dream of being an author with her husband. He read the very first draft of Unclaimed and gave her the words she needed to hear, “This is what you need to be doing.” Three years later the first book in the Unclaimed series was published with the second book expected to be out in 2015. Laurie lives in Mankato, MN, with her husband and two young sons. When she’s not writing, working, or spending time with her family, she’s either reading, running, or catching up on her favorite shows on Netflix.
