“I know. I’m no good at this.” He stares into his coffee. “Mom would have done a better job of it.”
I try to hide my surprise. Davis and I rarely talk about our parents and the fact that they’re gone – we’ve always dealt with it separately. Sometimes he says little things like this though, and I wonder how he’s doing.
He and I were fairly close when we both lived at home with our parents, even though he was always more of the partier and popular kid at school, me more of a recluse. And now we’re all that we have left. If I had stayed dead last semester, he would have been completely alone.
